Former NBA player in critical condition after shooting

WASHINGTON, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Former Memphis Grizzlies guard Antonio Burks was in critical condition on Tuesday at a Memphis hospital after being shot a day earlier during a robbery.

Burks, 29, underwent surgery on Monday night after being shot in the lower part of his torso, according to authorities at the Memphis Regional Medical Center.

Police told the Commercial-Appeal newspaper that Burks and four other men were in a backyard when robbed by three other men, who shot Burks and another man who was not identitifed but was also in critical condition.

Burks spent two seasons with the Grizzlies, averaging 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in 81 games from 2004 through 2006.

He later played in Serbia for Red Star Belgrade and last season averaged 6.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 24 games for Poland's Energa Czarni Slupsk and 3.8 points and 4.6 assists in five games with Bulgaria's Akademik Sophia.
