Santos brings back Vanderlei Luxemburgo as new head coach

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Vanderlei Luxemburgo Monday returned to his old team to sign a contract with Santos running through the 2009 season.

The newly signed head coach claims that his goal will not only be to keep the team from falling into the second division of the 2010 Brazilian Championships, but also to lead the team to the 2010 Libertadores Cup.

Luxemburgo is back to Santos after an 18 month absence.

He left the team in 2007 and headed to Palmeiras, where he thought he and the club were on the same page. After a disappointing loss in the Libertadores Cup quarterfinals and a mediocre start to the 2009 Brazilian Championships, Luxemburgo was let go.

This led his old team to strike a new deal that would bring the coach back.

Luxemburgo has a great history with the club. In 1997, he led Santos to win the Rio-Sao Paulo Tournament. In 2004 they claimed the Brazilian Championship. In 2006 and 2007 Luxemburgo led his team to win the Sao Paulo state championship.

The coach will have the challenge of lifting the team from 13th place and finishing among the top four in order to qualify for the 2010 Libertadores.
